5 Halloween Costumes that Need Retiring Immediately (2014)
Last year we wrote this post featuring some of the costumes that we should never see again, and launched a “no more sexy costume challenge.” Unfortunately there have already been some new offensive and down right wrong entrants worthy of the list, so we thought it was appropriate to create a 2014 edition. Maybe next year will be free of blackface and sexy children’s costumes…maybe. By the way, if you are wondering if your costume for tonight may be offensive, check out this GQ infographic that can let you know for sure.
1. Ray and Jenay Rice
It’s months later and we are still trying to get the awful visions of Ray Rice beating his then fiance Jenay to the point of unconsciousness out of our heads. There is nothing funny about domestic violence and to make a costume to poke fun at this serious matter is just unconscionable. And that sad part is, this has been a seemingly popular one this season, including with blackface and even involving children.
2. “Major Flirt” for Little Girls
Who thought it was a good idea to make a costume for 5-7 year old girls called “Major Flirt”? We have no words for all of the people who had a part in coming up with this idea, work for this company or even Party City where one of our readers found this costume (ironically enough, on sale!).
3. Sexy Ebola Nurse
OK, let’s be clear: there is NOTHING SEXY ABOUT EBOLA. Absolutely nothing. It’s a horrible, in many cases fatal disease that should be off limits for the Halloween costume jokes, but I guess we’re wrong. The one thing that is funny, however, is the disclaimer in case someone really tried to use it for real HAZMAT protection.
Babies + illegal drugs (in most states) do not mix. Come on. And I get it that some people enjoy being crass and funny, but don’t bring the babies into your sick humor, please.
5. Sexy ISIS Fighters
Like many of these other costumes, terrorism is something else that should not be funny nor “sexed up.” SMH.
