Audra McDonald Makes Tony Award History

Last night, Audra McDonald gave us another reason to love her when she did something no other actress has ever done: she won her sixth Tony Award. This award for best lead actress in a play for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill put her in a stratosphere of her own.

Her previous five Tonys were for best lead actress in a musical in Porgy and Bess, best featured actress in a musical in Ragtime and Carousel and best featured actress in a play in A Raisin in the Sun and Master Class. This talented singer and actress also has two Grammys as well as two Emmy nominations.

After seeing Audra perform as Billie Holiday, it’s so clear why she won. In this clip from The Colbert Report you can see how she so beautifully embodied the voice and persona of Billie:
