Woman to Watch: Gina Torres
Hometown: Bronx, New York
Family Affair: Gina is the wife of Laurence Fishburne. They met while filming ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and were married in 2002. In 2007 the couple welcomed their daughter, Delilah, into the world.
Early Years: Gina grew up absorbing the rich culture of her predominantly Latino neighborhood. It was in those days that her parents, natives of Cuba, taught her good old fashion values. Regarding her parents, Gina says, “My parents were classy beautiful Latin people. They grew up in the 30’s, a time when you looked clean, you were pressed; you looked people in the eye; you were gracious, no matter how much money you did or didn’t have. Those were the values I went into the world with.” Gina attend LaGuardia High School of the Arts and it was there that she was bitten by the “bug.” Gina had this to say about her decision not to pursue higher education, “To say my parents weren’t thrilled would be a huge understatement. I was ready to fly or fall. It was the only way for me to know if I have what it takes to make a life for myself in that world. Thankfully, it’s all worked out quite nicely.”
Where You’ve Seen Her: Gina’s credits include stage, television and film. On the small screen, you’ve probably seen her on Gossip Girl, CSI, Law & Order, Boston Legal and Xena Warrior Princess to name a few. She took her turn on Broadway in the production of ‘Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public’ and ‘Face Value’. Even though her first professional stage experience was in a dinner theater, Gina says, “I didn’t care. I was completely in love with my circumstance. I was doing what I love AND was getting paid for it!” Other plays off off Broadway, where she’s lit up the stage include, Antigone, Pericles of Tyre and The Wiz.
Latest Project: Gina is currently staring in the hit USA Network series, ‘Suits’. She plays high powered attorney and lead partner in the firm, Jessica Pearson.
Talent to Spare: Gina is a trained opera and jazz singer and has also performed in a gospel choir.
Awards of Note: Gina was the recipient of the ALMA Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Syndicated Drama Series for her role in Cleopatra 2525. In 2004, she was nominated for the International Press Academy’s Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (series/drama), for her role as Jasmine in Angel.
