Phenomenal Women

Woman to Watch: Mindy Kaling

With the Emmy’s airing this Sunday we thought it appropriate to feature one of our favorite Emmy nominated comedic writers.

Name: Mindy Kaling

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Occupation: Executive Producer/Actress, NBC’s “The Office”

Education: Dartmouth College, graduate with a degree in playwriting

Growing Up: Mindy was raised with her older brother in Cambridge, MA by her Mother, a surgeon and her Father, an architect. She spent a lot of time reading after school and was a big fan of Saturday Night Live.

College Days: As a student at Dartmouth, Mindy actively indulged her creative talents. She was a member of an improvisational comedy troupe called The Dog Day Players as well as a member of the a cappella group, The Rockappellas. She also created a comic strip called “Badly Drawn Girl” for The Dartmouth, the college’s main newspaper and wrote for The Jack-O-Lantern, the college’s humor magazine.

Big Break: Mindy made her national writing debut in 2003 when she co-authored and co-starred in the play, “Matt & Ben” with her friend Brenda Withers. The play was a sharp-witted look at the implausible yet real story of these two best friend’s overnight success. The real irony is how the play virtually became Mindy’s overnight success as it was a hit off-broadway. The play won New York International Fringe Festival’s “Best Play” prize and was featured at the 2003 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. Additionally, the play was on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List” for “Hot Play” and was listed as one of Time Magazine’s “Top Ten Theatrical Events” of 2003.

Career Take-Off: It was during Mindy’s off-broadway run that Greg Daniels, show runner for NBC’s “The Office”, saw Mindy in the play and offered her to come write for his show. Since that time she’s written/produced dozens of episodes and is even seen on screen as the lovably chatty character, Kelly Kapoor. The show has garnered several awards and nominations including the Emmy for Best Comedy. The Office is up for several Emmy’s this year as well including “Outstanding Comedy Series”. Recently, it was announced that Mindy was elevated to Executive Producer of the hit show (Yay Mindy!)

Fun Facts: Mindy’s birth name is Vera Mindy Chokalingam. In her spare time she writes a blog called “Things I’ve Bought That I Love”. She wrote her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), which is set for release in November of 2011. Mindy was featured in Entertainment Weekly’s list of the “10 Funniest Actresses in Hollywood” and made People’s “2011 Most Beautiful” people list.
