Vyne World Movie Review: Bridesmaids
By K. Boyd
I love to laugh which makes me a huge fan of comedy. Whether they’re sketch comedies, situation comedy, stand up or a comedic movie, I can appreciate the talent it takes to make another person laugh. Oddly enough I rarely go to the movies to see comedies because I don’t want to be disappointed. But every now and then a trailer will grab me enough to want to take a trip to the box office instead of waiting for it to be released on DVD. Such was the case when I saw the trailer for Judd Apatow’s new movie, Bridesmaids starring Maya Rudolph and Kristin Wiig. So in honor of one of my sister-friend’s birthday, we went to check out Bridesmaids.
I think what I liked most about the film was that it touched on the often complicated and paradoxical range of emotions that girlfriends may experience when their bestie gets engaged. The scene where Maya announces her engagement is classic! Likewise I liked that they didn’t ignore Maya’s bi-racial heritage but at the same time they didn’t make a big deal about it, which is how it should be. Kudos to the casting director who made sure to reflect Maya’s diversity in scenes like the engagement party and the wedding. It was refreshing to see a cast that reflects the way the world is beginning to look today.
Additionally, I loved that they showed girls being funny…and not just “punch line” funny but “physically comedic” funny too. Humor is not one dimensional, and this cast brought the funny from all different dimensions. Between Kristin, Maya and Melissa McCarthy I found myself chuckling out loud and on cue. I also liked that the characters were relatable and their storylines, particularly Kristin Wiig’s, were written in a way that felt real.
Several movie reviews have compared Bridesmaids to The Hangover saying it’s the female version…and while I thoroughly enjoyed The Hangover, I really think the storyline of Bridesmaids was much more layered. So for that reason, I give Bridesmaids 4 out of 4 Berries on The Vyne. Check it out and let us know what you think!
