“I’ve Been Here Before”: A Poem by Jonathan M. Butler

I’ve been here before …the giddiness of newness
in full bloom like the best of spring,

the nervous anticipation,
hoping to show the best of me
and receive the best of you …

with open mind
and open heart …

momentarily transcending race, religion, reality, and time,

temporarily remembering what it was like to be a child …
to follow without knowing,
to walk without knowing where to,
to play without wondering why or how,
to imagine without knowing when fantasy fades and reality reigns.I’ve been here before …

when everything is light and free
and conversations go on for hours
and thoughts seem uncontrollable
and tension arises in urges to touch and be touched …

and for a moment I feel a sense of peace,
for a moment I feel secure being myself,
for a moment I am in the full bloom of possibilities like white lilies and African violets,

for a moment I am dancing the dance of life uninhibited,
with consequences to bear later,
with the inevitable delayed for another day
with me enjoying you in the best of
and me meditating on the idea of stopping tomorrow,
because today, we have healed the divides
today, we have solved the problems of the world,
today, we are two people breathing each other’s air
and consuming each other’s space and thoughts
and sharing each other’s dreams like we share them with Godand today is good …

and tomorrow is tomorrow
