Vyne Entrepreneur Spotlight: Ivonne Ruggles & Michelle Perez
Relationship: Former classmates at Kellogg School of Management
Business venture (include website): www.evieevan.com
Where did the idea of your business come from?: We came up with the idea in grad school where we were listening to a presentation on the beauty market. We thought there were gaps in the market that we could address, specifically for ethnic women. We turned to each other during the presentation and said “We can do this… We can do this better!”
When did you start your business?: 2009
Do you focus on your business full time?: Yes
If so, what made you decide to leave your former career to start this?: We wanted to dedicate ourselves to this business fully.
What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned?: We have learned that we need to take time to celebrate our successes. Things move so fast even in one day, and if you don’t stop to celebrate the moment will be lost and you are on to the next task.
What advice would you give someone thinking about starting their own business?: Be prepared to eat, breathe, and sleep for your business – it is what it takes in order to be successful!
What is the most gratifying thing about being a business owner?: Being able to make a direct impact on your business
What is the most challenging thing about being a business owner?: Being inundated with requests and being able to prioritize what is right for the business
What is the best and most challenging things about having a business partner?: The best part is having someone to bounce ideas off of that shares your vision and dedication for the company. The most challenging part is that you are both so invested that sometimes it is hard to take a step back from an idea and change courses.
What do you and your business partner do to make sure that it’s not all work and no play?: We are a big fan of happy hour! We also try to do little things throughout the day to make it fun – there are dart guns in our office.
