Spotlight On: Mellody Hobson

President. Trustee. Global Leader.

Mellody HobsonAt just 40 years old, she has accomplished more things than many have in their entire lives. As an advocate of financial literacy and an educator to millions across America on personal finance, Mellody Hobson is a prime example of what happens when you have sharp focus and determination.

Mellody was born in Chicago, Illinois and was the baby girl of six children. Her mother, who made a living rehabbing and renting houses, made it a point to give Mellody a private school education, even when her tenants did not pay their rent. This educational foundation and demonstrated academic excellence helped Mellody gain acceptance to Princeton University, where she ultimately received a BA from the Woodrow Wilson School of International Relations and Public Policy.

While at Princeton, she interned with a company started and led by fellow Princeton alum, and the person who conducted her interview into the school, John Rogers. After graduation she joined Ariel Capital Management where she commenced an extraordinary corporate journey. This journey, which included a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, resulted in her becoming president of Ariel at just 31 years old.

Being the president of the largest African-American-owned capital management firm in the world is only one thing that keeps Mellody busy. She is also on the board of high caliber companies including Starbucks, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., and DreamWorks Animation SKG, and is the chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of Arial Investment Trust. You can also catch her many mornings on ABC’s Good Morning America where she is a regular financial contributor.

There is certainly much more to come from Ms. Hobson. In 2001 she was named a “Global Leader of Tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and The Wall Street Journal profiled her as one of 50 Women to Watch. Check out Mellody’s personal finance tips on Good Morning America
